How to Use Sodium Carbonate to Remove Oil From Clothes

Things You'll Need
- Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
- Warm water
- Paper towel
- Washing machine

If the oil is still wet on the garment, blot the area gently with a paper towel to remove as much of the excess oil as possible.

If the oil has dried, moisten the area with warm water and blot the area with paper towel. Use as many paper towels as necessary to absorb the oil.

Sprinkle the oil stain liberally with sodium bicarbonate. Rub the sodium bicarbonate into the garment with your fingers to penetrate the stain. Let sit for 30 minutes.

Rinse off the sodium bicarbonate. Check to see if the oil stain is still visible. If it's gone, launder as usual in your washing machine. Check the stained area before you put the clothing in the dryer to be sure the stain is completely gone. If the stain is still visible, sprinkle the area with more sodium bicarbonate and let sit for another 30 minutes.

Rinse the stained area once again with warm water. If the stain is gone, launder as usual. You may need to repeat the application of sodium bicarbonate several times in order to lift the stain.

For best results, treat the oil stain as soon as possible.
Never put stained clothing in the dryer because this will cause the stain to set and make it nearly impossible to remove.
