How to Fix a Buffer Overflow Virus

Malware uses numerous ways to exploit a computer. In the case of a buffer overflow virus, the buffer is used to hold data outside of the memory space allocated for the program. This data can then be exploited to overwirte adjacent memory. When this happens, the computer could crash, the program could run improperly, and the system's security could be at risk for having programs executed remotely or being the target of a denial-of-service attack.

Instructions

    • 1

Update the virus definitions and/or signature files for your antivirus software. This will help your software identify newer malware on your computer. Most commercial antivirus solutions will inform you when there is a new update available; however, you can manually update these files at any time.

Turn off System Restore. In Windows XP, right-click on "My Computer" and then select "Properties". Click on the "System Restore" tab and place a check mark in "Turn Off System Restore". Then click "OK." In Windows Vista, click the "Start" button, right-click the "Computer" icon and then click "Properties". Then click on "System Protection" under the "Tasks" column. When the "User Account Control" window pops up, click "Continue". Now look under the "System Protection" tab to find "Available Disks". Uncheck the box for the drive you will be scanning. Now, click "Turn System Restore Off" on the pop-up window. Finish by clicking "OK."

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. For most computers you will need to press the "F8" key when the computer is starting up. At the menu, select "Safe Mode with networking."

    • 4

Run your antivirus software. Make sure that you select the "Full Scan" option instead of "Quick Scan." Let your antivirus software clean or quarantine any viruses found.

    • 5

Download Malwarebytes Anti Malware (see Resource 1). When you have downloaded this software, install it on your computer. You will be asked immediately if you wish to update the software. Click "Yes."

    • 6

Run Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Choose "Full Scan" instead of "Quick Scan." The program was designed to clean malware from your computer that your anti-virus software may have missed. Allow it to remove or quarantine any malware it may have found.

Tips & Warnings

  • Run your security software frequently to avoid any malware infections.

  • If you do not frequently update the virus definitions for your security software, your computer will be susceptible to attacks that your software is unaware of.
