How to Create a Background for a Photo in CS4
There are occasions when we have a photo with a background that we would like to replace. This might be because you just don't like something in the current background and would like to swap it for one from another photo. Or it may be that you are creating an ad or brochure and want to place the people or objects in the photo against a colored or patterned background If you have access to Photoshop CS4, you can create this new background yourself .

Load the photo you want to work on onto your computer, either by connecting your digital camera and transferring the file or by transferring from whatever media it is stored on (CD, SD card). If you plan to replace the background with one from another photo, load this photo as well.

Open Photoshop. Select ''File" and click " Open." Browse to the photo you want to alter and open it.

Right-click on the layer in the "Layers" panel and select "Duplicate." Select the bottom layer and click "New Layer." You now have three layers.

Select the top layer. Click on the "Quickmask" icon. Use the brush to paint over the people and objects you want to keep. Click on the "Quickmask" icon again and the background will be turned into a selection. Hit "Delete" on your keyboard to remove it.

Select the middle layer. Select the "Paintbucket" tool and use it to till the layer with a color or pattern you want. Or choose the "Gradient" tool and drag a gradient across the layer. Or open the other image you loaded on "Copy" and "Paste"it into the layer. You now have a new background for your photo.
