How to Refresh a Stock Trading Quote

Refreshing a stock quote that you've found in your browser is as simple as pressing the "Refresh" button on your browser toolbar. Most browsers also allow you to refresh a web page by pressing the "F8" key on your keyboard. Most web stock quoting services are slightly delayed from market updates by a few seconds. In the case of quotes from some exchanges (particularly foreign ones), the quotes can be delayed by 15 minutes or more.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a free online quoting service such as those offered from Yahoo! Finance, Google Finance, CNBC, Quote.com or CNN to see live stock quotes. Refresh the quotes using your browser to get updated information. Due to Internet latency, the quotes may be delayed by 5/100ths of a second to five seconds.

Consider using live quoting software from a company that you have a brokerage account with. This software will be less affected by Web latency, as it will directly transmit quote information to your computer with fewer intermediary servers. This software also will automatically refresh quotes so you have access to real-time pricing information.

Purchase a faster Internet connection for more accurate price information and faster trade execution. A Bloomberg terminal or similar device will give you the fastest quote possible refreshed in real time. However, Bloomberg terminals are too expensive for most individual investors.
