How to Wire a House for Cable & Internet

Broadband Internet usage has increased dramatically in the past few years--from 19% in 2003 to 74% in 2009. Broadband through cable continues to be a primary delivery source. If you are looking at adding cable TV service to a residence, it makes sense to also include broadband Internet as well as VoIP Internet phone service. All of these services use the same cable line.

Determine which rooms need to be hard wired. When ordering cable service, you will have the option of adding cable service to multiple rooms. While there may be an added cost for the initial setup, the cost for the service will not increase unless you add a cable box to each room. If there is any chance that you will want to watch cable TV in a particular room, have it hard wired. The same considerations should be made if you will be doing the wiring yourself either pre-construction or post construction.

Set up wireless Internet through a router. While it would be nice to have a cable line running into every room in the house, it's not always practical. That doesn't mean, however, that you won't be able to access the Internet from every room. The solution is wireless Internet. Adding a wireless router will give you Internet access where ever you can receive a signal, including outside in your yard or on the patio.

Use your wireless Internet to access peripherals. Even if all of the computers in a residence are hard wired with a dedicated cable line, you can still take advantage of a wireless Internet connection to share peripherals such as a printer.
