1
Plant a tree seedling in early spring for best results. If the seedling is purchased before then, store it in a cool dry area. Open the bag that the roots are contained in and add a small amount of water. Do not soak the roots or leave them sitting in water.
-
2
Dig a hole that is big enough to accommodate the roots without bending them. Place the seedling in the hole up to the root collar. Do not bury the trunk of the tree over the root collar. Refill the hole with soil and be sure to push the soil down firmly to eliminate air pockets.

3
Keep the soil around the seedling damp but not overly wet. Water it in the morning to give the soil plenty of time to drain during the day.
-
4
Feed the tree if it is not thriving well. Use a slow-release 10-10-10 formula and work a small amount into the soil surrounding the tree.
-
5
Keep the area around the tree weed free. A thin layer of mulch around the trunk of the tree will help to discourage weed growth.

Tips & Warnings
Most tree seedlings do best in an area with bright sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight initially to prevent burning sensitive seedlings.
If the soil in the chosen location is not loose or rich enough, add peat moss or any other organic compost. Sand is also helpful in establishing good drainage.
When planting multiple trees or planting a tree in a location with surrounding vegetation, allow sufficient space to allow the tree room to grow. Most trees have roots that expand rapidly outward well before the tree shows signs of growth. Do not plant near water pipes or other underground utilities.
