How to Build a Fast Mustang

Although late-model Mustangs come with a healthy 317 horsepower, owners are usually looking for ways to push the limits of their crankshafts by finding new and exciting ways to build a fast Mustang. The great thing about building a fast Mustang is that it can generally be done by adding a few simple bolt-on items.

Things You'll Need

• Cold air kit
• Throttle body spacer
• Cat back exhaust
• Computer tuner

Instructions

1. Install a high-flow cold air filter kit. Mustang50performance.com claims they have seen as much as 12.85 horsepower from a cold air intake that does not require a re-tune of the computer.

2. Install a throttle body spacer. Rpmoulet.com recently tested a Gen X throttle body spacer and obtained 10 extra horsepower in their V6 Mustang.

3. Install a mandrel bent high-flow cat-back exhaust. Per Jumptronix.com, a mandrel bent exhaust allows for less restriction for escaping gases, which will help increase overall horsepower in your vehicle.

4. Reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. It's common to reduce weight by replacing cast-iron flywheels with lighter aluminum flywheels. You can also reduce weight by upgrading from a cast suspension to lighter weight aluminum suspension.

5. Tune your computer. Although each automotive computer tuner allows you to control different items, most will allow you to tune the air/fuel mixture, shift points and rev limits. When adding aftermarket horsepower, a computer tuner is a must to get the most from your performance
