Instructions

    • 1

Lay down your drop cloth in the space that you plan to work. A long table or hard floor works best.

    • 2

Lay out the solid colored fabric for your banner on top of the drop cloth. Your piece of fabric should be a couple inches taller than the letter stencils you plan to use and 12 inches longer than the saying that you plan to stencil on the banner.

    • 3

Take the first stencil that will appear on the left side of your banner and lay it flat on your fabric 6 inches from the edge of the fabric.

    • 4

Squirt out your fabric paint on paper plates. Dip your stencil brush in the fabric paint and then dab it over the stencil until the whole stencil is filled in. Use a quick up down motion with the stencil brush, not a back and forth motion like you usually do with a paintbrush.

    • 5

Lift the stencil and lay down the next stencil to be used and repeat the process. Rinse your stencil brush in water if you are moving on to another color. Keep repeating this process until the whole banner is stenciled. Let the banner dry for 2 hours.

    • 6

Punch a hole in the top corner of each end of the banner about 3 inches from the edge. Loop ribbon through the hole to hang the banner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a disappearing ink fabric marker to plan out the lettering and shapes on your banner before you begin to use fabric paint if you are unsure of how it will all be laid out.

  • You can find out how long the lettering and shapes on your banner will run by doing a test run with a long strip of paper from a paper roll.
