How to Make Urine PH Test Paper

Use potential of hydrogen (PH) paper to determine the level of acidity or basicity of a solution. Some people purchase urine test paper, also referred to as strips, to test the pH level of their urine---an important tool in testing for certain afflictions. Use a few household items to make your own at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Shred or tear a head of red cabbage, putting the pieces into a blender.

    • 2

Add 2 cups of hot water.

    • 3

Purée the mixture of cabbage and water in the blender.

    • 4

Strain the cabbage/water solution with a mesh strainer, separating it from any leftover bits and pieces of cabbage, then pour the mixture into a bowl. This will serve as your pH indicator.

    • 5

Cut a coffee filter into 1/2-inch-wide strips.

    • 6

Soak the coffee strips in your cabbage/water solution for about three to four hours. These coffee strips will become your urine pH paper.

    • 7

Place the wet strips on a stain-proof or disposable tray, and allow then to dry completely. Leave a little space between the strips so they do not overlap.

    • 8

Make a chart for reading results obtained with your urine test strips. PH 2 will show a pink or reddish-orange color, pH 4 will appear dark red to purplish, pH 6 will turn violet and pH 8 will turn blue. A pH of 10 will show as a bluish-green shade, while a pH of 12 will turn a shade of yellowish green.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you've been asked to test your urine pH because of a health condition, ask your doctor about the accuracy of homemade pH papers before you use them.

  • Be careful, when removing your pH paper from the solution because the cabbage water may stain clothes and surfaces.

  • You can use ordinary soap and water to clean the cabbage water stains off your hands. However, using a pair of tongs to handle the wet test papers can prevent the temporary staining of your skin.

  • Use homemade pH test papers with more than just urine: Test the pH levels of a full range of liquids, including juices, milk, bleach and saliva.

  • PH levels of 1 through 6 are acidic. Levels of seven and above are basic.
