How to Place an Area Rug Under a Couch

More than one million older adults fall every year in California alone resulting in about 200,000 injuries. Throw rugs, also called area rugs, are reported to be a major cause of the tripping that leads to falls and injuries. Securing the area rug with one edge under the couch is one way to help prevent falls and injuries. The other edges of the rug should not be ignored though. They should be secured with sticky carpet pads or double edged tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep and mop the floor where you are planning to place the area rug. Let it dry completely before going on to step 2.

    • 2

Attach the double sided tape or sticky carpet pad to the back side of the rug. Leave the waxy paper coating on the adhesive backing until the rug is set in place so you will be able to slide it. If you are using a sticky carpet pad, which can be found in most department stores, you need to make sure it goes all of the way to the edge of the rug. The corners of the rug are the spots that will usually curl up first and trip the people walking through the room.

    • 3

Slide the area rug so 3 inches of it will fit under the edge of the couch. Peel the waxy paper backing off of the back of the carpet pad or tape before putting the weight of the couch on the rug.

    • 4

If the rug is long enough place the couch so the legs sit on the rug. If the rug is short move it to one end so at least one couch leg will be sitting on the rug.

    • 5

Smooth the area rug with your hands so there are no bumps in it. Make sure nothing is sticking up that could cause someone to trip.
