1
Paint your walls in any shade of brown you desire. A lighter shade might be best for large surfaces such as a great room where the walls connect with the next room. A darker shade, such as chocolate brown, used as an accent color on one wall can make a smaller room appear larger. Any shade of brown that you choose should be a neutral shade that is fairly easy to adapt to any color scheme you may want to include or change to in the future.

2
Replace burgundy furniture if you can, reupholster it or simply cover the furniture with covers that fit snug. With darker walls, opt for lighter shades in sofa and chairs, such as in a cream or light beige color. With lighter walls, go for darker brown furniture.

3
Add accessories, such as an area rug that includes various shades of brown. Smaller accessories, such as throws and pillows can be in any color you choose. For example, choose reds or yellows during the fall, light blue during winter, hot pink during the spring and lime green during summer. If you change your mind about your decor often, using a neutral brown background will allow you to completely change the look of your room with a few interchangeable accessories.
