How to Charge a Motorcycle Battery When the Engine Is Running

After a motorcyle battery has been jump-started, a motorcyclist needs to charge the battery to ensure that the bike will start for the next adventure. All this really requires is for the motorcyclist to spend a little extra time riding the bike.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the jumper cables from the battery, being sure to touch only the plastic pieces of the cables.

    • 2

Replace the battery cover panel on the bike, to protect the battery from the elements.

    • 3

Take the bike for a ride. Keep the RPMs at higher levels. One way to do that would be to keep the bike at a gear lower than required while riding.

    • 4

Spend at least an hour riding the motorcycle to ensure that the battery is fully charged.

Tips & Warnings

  • A fully charged battery is at 12.8 volts. The headlights will start to dim at 12.7 volts. A battery should be replaced at 12 volts. Also, protective gloves and goggles should be worn to shield the skin and eyes from electrolytes.

  • Use caution when working with a battery. Avoid contact with electrolytes. If ingested, drink large quantities of milk or water. Rinse the chemical from skin with water and use water to flush the eyes.
