How to Clean With Lye Soap
In earlier generations homemakers commonly made their own bread, clothing, and even soap. The soap was typically lye soap, a product made from lard and lye. Early pioneers rendered lye from wood ash and water when cans of lye, or caustic soda, was not available. Today lye soap is primarily available through specialty soap makers. But just like our great-grandparents, we can use it in a variety of ways. Traditional lye soap is free of additives and fragrances and naturally contains glycerin, which is often removed from most commercial soap. Glycerin softens skin and is added to lotions. Does this Spark an idea?
