How to Convert Recipes for a Crock-Pot
Cooking with a Crock-Pot is very convenient and simple. Most recipes can easily be converted to a Crock-Pot recipe by adapting some of the steps and amounts of ingredients. Some steps in a regular recipe can even be skipped because most ingredients are combined and cooked at the same time in a Crock-Pot. The most important thing to remember when converting recipes for Crock-Pot use is that liquids do not boil away in the pot as they do when using other methods of cooking. Therefore, the amount of liquids might need to be reduced, depending on the recipe and other ingredients that will be cooked. Does this Spark an idea?

Convert the cooking time of the meal for Crock-Pot cooking. The general guidelines for cooking times are four to six hours on low or two hours on high in a Crock-Pot for a recipe that requires 15 to 30 minutes of cooking; six to 10 hours on low or three to four hours on high in a Crock-Pot for those that would otherwise require 35 to 45 minutes; and eight to 18 hours on low, or four to six hours on high for those recipes that require one to three hours of cooking.

Add vegetables at the same time as meat. The vegetables will not be overcooked in a Crock-Pot. When you combine vegetables with meat, the cooking time in a Crock-Pot should be at least eight hours on low or four hours on high. Vegetables do not need to be sauteed or fried before being added to the Crock-Pot. They should be cut in small pieces for thorough cooking.

3
Add cream, sour cream, yogurt or milk at the end of the cooking process. Keep these items refrigerated until the last hour of cooking.
-
4
Reduce whole-leaf spice and herb amounts by half of what the recipe calls for. This will ensure that the spices and herbs do not overpower the food as it cooks.
-
5
Add 1/4 cup extra liquid for every 1/4 cup uncooked rice. Cook pasta before adding it to the Crock-Pot.
-
6
Add liquids last if making a soup recipe. Put in the soup ingredients and then pour in the water or other liquid ingredient. Add more liquid before serving if the soup is too thick.
