How to Clean Up Memory Usage on a PC

Over time and with constant use, a computers memory can get bogged down. This may be due to old files, unused programs, full caches, and simply an overextension of system resources. To keep your machine running quickly and smoothly, it is ideal to do maintenance on your computer at least once a month. Maintenance includes removing any old files, uninstalling old or unused programs, and running a cleaner on your system that will help free up resources for your computers memory.

  1. How to Clean Up Memory Usage on a PC

      Navigate to the CCleaner website. CCleaner is a free program that cleans your system of memory hogs such as temporary files, internet cache, cookies, and files currently in your recycle bin.

      Follow the steps to download and install CCCleaner. Once the software is downloaded and install, launch the program.

      In the CCleaner window, view both the Windows and Applications tabs. All the boxes checked are files that will be scanned and reviewed for removal.

      Select the Run Cleaner button. Select OK on the dialog box that appears, notifying you that running this cleaner means files will be permanently deleted from your system.

      Review the files that were removed once the cleaning is complete. The file names and details will be shown to you in a report once the files have been removed.

      Select the Registry icon that appears under the Cleaner icon in the left hand CCleaner dialog box. Select the Scan for Issues button. CCleaner will search for any issues in your registry, such as unused file extensions, empty folders, and other memory resource hogs.

      Select the Fix Selected Issues button that appears once the scan is complete. You will be prompted to back up changes to the registry prior to fixing any issues. Back up your changes, and then follow the CCleaner Registry Cleaner wizard as it shows you each issue found and how to resolve and remove it.

  • In addition to the above Steps, running a Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup once a month on your system can also help free up memory sources on your machine.
