How to Listen to Music From an iPod on a Computer

Since it was introduced to the public in 2001, the iPod has revolutionized the way we listen to music. Not only can the iPod play and store between 500 and 40,000 songs, depending on the model as of December 2009, but it can also be connected to your computer so that it can charge as you continue listening to your favorite tunes.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your iPod to your computer with the supplied USB cable. When your computer recognizes that your iPod is connected, iTunes should open automatically. If it doesn't, open iTunes just as you would with any other program on your computer.

    • 2

Click on "Music," which will be located under the iPod icon in the device list. The device list is located at the left hand side of the iTunes interface, below the "Library" and "Store" tabs.

    • 3

Find the song you want to listen to and either double-click on it with your computer mouse or press the "play" button, which is located in the upper left hand corner of iTunes.

    • 4

Connect your headphones to the headphone jack on your computer if you want to listen privately. If you want to listen to your music with the computer's speakers, simply adjust the speaker volume as you normally would.

Tips & Warnings

  • While your iPod is connected to your computer, you will not be able to use its click wheel to control what music you're listening to. To search your iPod library and control which songs are played, use the controls provided in iTunes -- the basic controls are located in the upper left corner and more advanced ones can be found by clicking on the "Controls" menu, which is located at the top of iTunes.

  • If you're listening to music downloaded from the iTunes store to another computer, you will need to authorize the new computer to play your iTunes purchases. You can authorize up to five computers to play your purchases.
