How to Use Wine Racks for Storage

Wine racks are made from a variety of sturdy materials, most commonly wood and metal. They have shelves or individual holders to accommodate several bottles of wine. Design shape and the number of bottles held vary. For best wine preservation, place or hang the rack in a dimly lit room free of heat and humidity. For long-term storage, lay the bottles horizontally flat so that the cork is kept moist and flavor stays intact. Moving wine bottles frequently negatively affects the wine's flavor. Storing wine in a rack prevents disturbing one bottle to reach another. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Set up racks facing you to view the bottle label, the cork or both.

    • 2

Place the wine rack on a flat, sturdy surface. If it is a hanging rack, be sure it is squarely and securely mounted. Check evenness with a level.

    • 3

Wipe off the wine bottle with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust or debris.

    • 4

Put the wine bottle in an empty rack space. Make sure that the bottle is fully supported by the rack. Place the bottle so that the label is not scraping or touching any supporting framework.

    • 5

Remove the bottle when you are ready to chill or drink the wine.

Tips & Warnings

  • When storing several types of wine, organize them by color, year and country of origin.

  • Use a room that holds a steady temperature. Do not subject wine bottles to the high heat of an oven or the chill of a nearby open freezer.

  • When getting started on a wine collection, conserve space and money by using only as many racks as you need.
