How to Use iSight for Mac for Video Conferencing

All modern Mac computers come with built in iSight web cameras. However, before you start video conferencing on your Mac with an iSight camera you need some other software in order for it to work. Skype is a useful piece of software that Mac, PC and Linux users can use for free video conferencing as long as the other person joining the conference has a Skype account as well.

      Download Skype onto your Mac. (see Resources) Once downloaded, open the file and install Skype. Open Skype and create a new Skype account. Fill out the brief Skype profile.

      Log in to Skype. Add those you would like to video conference with to your Contacts List. Add to your Contacts List by going to Contacts in the menu bar and scrolling down to Search for People on Skype. Once you find your Contacts, click "Add Contact".

      Call your Contacts by pressing the Call button next to the Contact's name in your Contacts List, on the left hand side of the screen. A new window will open when you click the Call button.

      Start video conferencing on your Mac by clicking the Video icon button on the Open Call window in Skype. A video of your face will appear in the lower left hand corner of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • To video conference on Skype all users must be logged in to Skype at the same time.

  • You cannot video conference on a Mac with a dial up connection. You need a DSL or cable modem in order to do it.

  • You cannot video conference on Skype if the other user does not have a web camera.
