How to Clean Imitation Leather

Imitation leather looks like the real thing but is less expensive than natural leather and much easier to clean. If you've ever tried to remove a stain from real leather, you know how time consuming and difficult it can be. Because most imitation leathers are made from polymers, they are more stain resistant than natural fibers, making them much easier to clean. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Mild hand soap
  • Sponge
  • White cloth
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton balls
  • White towel

Instructions

      Apply a mild hand soap to a damp sponge and wipe the entire surface of the imitation leather. This will remove any dirt from the surface. After cleaning the material, wipe away the soap with a damp white cloth.

      Apply a dime-sized amount of dish detergent to a damp sponge and work up some suds. Rub any greasy spots in a circular motion until the spot is clean. Wipe away the detergent with a damp white cloth.

      Dip a cotton ball in some rubbing alcohol and gently scrub away any remaining stains. The alcohol works especially well to combat tough stains like dye or ink. Continue scrubbing until the stain is no longer visible.

      Wipe the entire surface area of the imitation leather with a clean white cloth and some cold water to remove any excess soap or alcohol. Pay special attention to ares where alcohol was used. Alcohol can cause discoloration if it is allowed to sit on the imitation leather too long.
