How to Fold a Compact Treadmill
Compact treadmills are lighter, cheaper and easier to store than their full-sized, motorized counterparts. Knowing how to safely fold and unfold a treadmill is essential to saving space and ensuring that the exercise routine goes smoothly. Each model has it's own specifications, but grasping the basic mechanics behind all compact treadmills will help you become familiar with the workings of your machine. Mastering this simple technique allows you to get the most out of your equipment investment and then capitalize on it with great fitness results.

Folding
-
1
Unlock the treadmill from its upright position. For most models, this involves pulling the locking bar down so the front handlebar and console will move freely. Different models require certain actions, such as pulling the front handlebar upward, to allow the locking bar to move.
-
2
Move from the front of the treadmill, where the locking bar is likely located, and position yourself before the handlebar, facing the console. Note that the handlebar needs to be held in position as you make this change. Once positioned, pull the console module downward until it rests flat on the treadmill deck.

-
3
Lock the console module onto the treadmill deck. For most models, this simply requires pressing down until the locks engage. The treadmill should now be completely horizontal.
-
4
Move the treadmill to the desired location. Units with wheels can be lifted from one end and pushed with minimal effort.

Tips & Warnings
Treadmills typically come fully assembled and folded within a box. The unfolding process will likely involve unlocking the latches mentioned in the above steps, or lifting up on a quick-release lever. The console module should then be raised off the treadmill deck till it reaches an upright position, at which point you will press down the quick-release lever or engage the latches at the joints until the console module locks into place. These treadmills are often advertised as being ideal for apartments, motor homes or smaller bedrooms, and they can be stored under beds or in closets. Note that some higher-end models can come equipped with a hydraulics system, making the folding and unfolding process an even simpler, push-button process.
Improperly securing the treadmill in the folded position could result in injury from the handlebar and console falling onto the treadmill platform. Be sure to consult your model's specific steps for locking and securing. Never apply lubricant to the folding mechanisms, as this is unnecessary, and in many cases will void your warranty. Also, use proper lifting technique when moving a treadmill, and ask for assistance if you find it too heavy.
