How to Apply a Preemergent Weed Control in Mulch Beds
Applying preemergent weed control in mulch beds will prevent weeds and seeds from growing. Herbicide is available for two types of weeds: summer growing weeds and winter growing weeds. Be sure that you choose the right type for the weeds you want to control. By applying preemergent weed herbicide, you reduce competition for nutrients in your garden bed. Remove the old mulch from flower beds. Preemergent weed control works better when it is able to come in contact with the soil.

Apply your preemergent herbicide and avoid over-watering for a couple of weeks. Apply the herbicide in the amount indicated on the packaging.

Wait a few weeks after applying the herbicide to plant any new ornamental plants or shrubs in your flower bed.

Spread new mulch over your flower beds. If you use a coarse-textured mulch, make sure your spread a 4-inch layer. Fine-textured mulches must be well packed and at least 2 inches deep.
