How to Accurately Read Faster
Reading faster and more accurately is defined as fluency. Fluent readers are able to comprehend the text while automatically sounding out words, self-correcting, and determining the author's purpose. Fluency is achieved when you can read most of the text with little or no difficulty at an appropriate speed while applying strategies such as predicting, inferring and summarizing as you read.

1
Listen to examples of fluent reading. Hearing someone else read fluently is one of the most effective ways to become a better reader. Listen to audio books on CD or to short stories that can be downloaded online from sites such as ShortStoryRadio.com.
-
2
Use different reading styles. Silent reading is the preferred method of reading, but reading aloud is effective because you can hear yourself and self-assess your speed and expression.
-
3
Use strategies such as skimming, previewing and rereading. These techniques increase reading speed and comprehension by improving your ability to read for information and internally summarize the text.
-
4
Ask someone to listen to you read. Read a passage from a story or a section from a chapter in a textbook aloud to a parent, friend or a teacher. Knowing that you have an audience will naturally motivate you to read smoothly and clearly.
-
5
Practice recitation. Memorize portions of the Gettysburg Address, famous lines from Shakespeare, or poetry stanzas. This exercise will improve your ability to read accurately by focusing your attention on saying the correct words.
