Moss will not damage the fruit or the integrity of an apple tree. However, it can take away from the beauty of the tree. Moss also creates a hiding place for pests that can damage your apple tree and the fruit it bears. The best time to spray is late in the dormant period and through blossoming. Things You'll Need

  • Copper fungicide or lime sulfur chemicals
  • Sprayer
  • Pruning tools

Instructions

      Prune your apple tree, removing any dead or broken branches.

      Change into protective clothing including close toed shoes, long pants and a long sleeved shirt. Put on protective eyewear and gloves.

      Prepare your chemical spray according to the ratios and directions on the bottle. The general rule of thumb to kill moss is 100 gallons of water per 1/2 pound of lime sulfur or copper fungicide.

      Pour the amount of chemical needed according to instructions into the spraying mechanism and mix it well with water. The mechanism should be roughly 75 percent full.

      Power up the agitator and run it for 3 to 5 minutes before spraying. Spray your apple tree in even long strokes with the agitator continually running during application.

      Take off your protective clothing and wash after spraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply during a dry time so the chemical does not mix in with run off.

  • Apply pesticides only during appropriate weather conditions. Do not apply during times of moisture or on windy days.

  • Store pesticides in a cool, dry place that is safe from children and pets.
