How to Clean Photo Emulsion Out of Screen

Photo emulsion is a chemical used during the silkscreen process that transfers an image onto the screen. The silkscreen process is achieved by combining artwork, the photo emulsion, heat and light. The image may not fully transfer to the screen as a stencil if the screen is under- or overexposed to the heat and light or if the artwork is prepared correctly. Removing the photo emulsion cleans the screen for further use.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the ink from the screen. Don rubber gloves, protective eyewear and an old shirt or apron. Fill a rectangular pan or a sink, depending on the size of your screen, with enough bleach to immerse the screen completely.

    • 2

Set the timer for 10 minutes. Immerse the screen into the bleach. After five minutes have passed, use a scrub brush to scrub the front and back of the screen. Place the screen back into the bleach.

    • 3

Remove the screen from the bleach and rinse the screen with hot water. If your sink has a spray attachment, use the highest amount of pressure that the hose reaches. Scrub both sides of the screen with the brush and detergent for dishwashers. Rinse the screen with hot water. Allow the screen to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use acetone on the screen if there is still emulsion present after soaking.

  • Keep bleach away from eyes, clothing and skin.

  • Use bleach in a well-ventilated area and wash hands thoroughly after immersing hands, even if wearing gloves.
