How to Make Quilted Fabric Christmas Wall Hangings
Sew quilted fabric wall hangings for the Christmas holiday with small pieces of colored, printed and textured fabrics, ribbons, trims and embellishments. Children and adults can make different size wall hangings to decorate the home or to give as gifts. Religious or whimsical and novelty themes let a crafter's imagination and creativity shine through. These one-of-a-kind treasures can be displayed every holiday for years and years. The name of the crafter and the date a Christmas wall hanging was made can be added on the back for a personal touch.

Instructions

1
Hem the muslin on the sewing machine on all four sides. Fold in each edge 1/2-inch and straight stitch. Press with an iron.
-
2
Lay the hemmed muslin right side down on a work table. Lay fusible webbing over the muslin and cut so that it fits within the size of the muslin, close to the edge.

3
Choose the main theme of the Christmas wall hanging, such as the Three Kings, Frosty the Snowman, or a simple Christmas tree. Cut fabrics to create the design and lay them on the fusible webbing which is on top of the muslin. The fabric pieces should abut each other or slightly overlap 1/8-inch. Use straight pins to secure the fabric pieces in place.
-
4
Use a hot iron (no steam) to fuse the fabric pieces of the wall hanging design to the fusible webbing as well as to the muslin backing. Fusible webbing is a man-made fiber that melts when heated with a hot iron to bond fabric together.
-
5
Use a narrow zig-zag stitch on the sewing machine to give the seams of the fabric pieces on the wall hanging design a nice finish. The same color thread can be used for all.
-
6
Straight stitch double-fold bias tape to the four sides of the wall hanging. Slip the edge of the hanging inside the bias tape while sewing for a neat finish on the front and the back.
-
7
Fold the top of the wall hanging back 1-inch and straight stitch 1/4-inch from the edge to make an opening for a dowel to hang the wall hanging.
-
8
Embellish the wall hanging with charms, buttons and other decorative items to enhance the design.
-
9
Slip the dowel rod through the opening at the top. Attach a strip of ribbon at both ends and hang on a wall. The crafter can sign and date the work on the back of the wall hanging with a permanent marker.

Tips & Warnings
It is not necessary to have sewing skills; however, a sewing machine with basic decorative stitching is helpful.
Keep a craft box handy to collect bits and pieces of themed and textured fabrics, trims and embellishments.
Some of the most beautiful fabric (women's clothing) can be purchased at thrift shops for a few dollars. These can be used for quilted wall hanging crafts and other projects. Ask home decor stores for free expired drapery sample books, another source for excellent fabric scraps.
Fusible webbing is available at craft and fabric stores in different weights.
Children should be supervised by an adult when using a sewing machine for this project, unless the child is older and has sewing experience.
