How Do I Print to PDF?

PDF files are used practically everywhere because they can easily be viewed using free software available to all users, whether they are on the Windows, Mac, or Linux platforms. Although PDF files are easy to distribute, the software used to create PDF files is often quite expensive, costing upwards of $299 for proprietary software. The alternative to buying this type of software is to use a program that prints to a PDF such as doPDF. This software provides just enough flexibility to distribute a document with ease.

Instructions

Download/Install doPDF

1. Navigate to: http://www.dopdf.com/download.php.

2. Click on the "cnet download" mirror that says "Download Now" in the middle of the page.

3. Click "Download Now."

4. Save the file to a commonly used directory such as "My Documents" or "Desktop."

5. Click "doPDF.exe" from the location where you saved the file.

6. Click the appropriate language for the installation and click "OK."

7. Click "I accept the agreement" and click "Next."

8. Click "Next" for the default installation folder and click "Next" for the Start Menu folder.

9. Click "Set doPDF printer as default printer" only if you want to print to PDF files by default. Otherwise, your current printer configurations are not changed. Click "Next."

10. Select the languages you wish to install for the program. Click "Next."

11. Click "Install" then click "Finish."

Printing to a PDF Using Microsoft Word as an Example

1. Open Microsoft Word from the start menu.

2. Open the document that you wish to print.

3. Click "Print."

4. Click the listing of printers next to "Printer Name."

5. Click "doPDF." Specify the location for saving the PDF file, then click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

• doPDF can be used to print for all programs and not just Microsoft Word.

• Once the PDF document is created, you will not be able to edit it unless you have proprietary software that can create and edit PDF files.
