Keep in mind a basic closet design that will add space for your clothes. Use the corners of the closet for hanging space. Clothes that are on shelves in the corners of closets often get lost. Leave approximately 12 inches between shelves. Too little space makes it hard to see the clothes because it is dark, while too much space is a waste of the available area.

Install items in your closet that will make organizing it easier. These include sweater boxes, additional shelves and rods, and shoe racks.

    • 3

Get rid of everything in the closet that has no reason to be there. The more room there is in a deep closet, the easier it will be to organize it.

    • 4

Sort out your closet by placing your clothes in different groups. Different groups include casual wear, formal clothes, shoes and coats.

    • 5

Sort out the groups into smaller categories. Break them up into groups of clothes that you wear often during this time of the year, clothes you wear only on an occasional basis, and clothes you won't wear until another season.

    • 6

Hang or store clothes that are out of season at the back of your deep closet. Place clothes that you wear on a part-time basis in the closet next. Place clothes that you wear frequently closest to the door. The same methods apply for shoes, which should be placed on shoe racks to save space.

    • 7

Install a small drawer to accommodate items such as scarves and belts. Placing them in a drawer will leave more room to hang clothes. It will also make them much easier to find. You can also hang items like belts on the back of the closet door.
