Measure your available space and take careful assessment of the area. Make note of concrete or bricks that will need to be removed, as well as any landscaping that will need to be relocated. Look for any possible leaks and irrigation that may need to be capped off.

Determine the size and shape of your new patio and choose a layout for the tiles.

Pick a color and size for your tiles and bring a few sample tiles home. Lay them out in your yard and look at them throughout the day in varying lights and from different locations.

Plan your landscaping. Deciding what plants, raised beds, containers and trees you will include on your new patio will be important for planning the irrigation. If you are planning drip irrigation, you may want to run the lines underground before the concrete tiles are put down.

Draw a detailed sketch on graph paper. Include detailed measurements and draw in all the landscaping. A sketch will give you a visual image of the final design and will also help you estimate what supplies are necessary.

Use colored pencils to add color to your drawing. Seeing the drawing as similar to the final concept as possible will help you make final changes. Cut out small pieces of paper in the same scale as your furniture.
