Foundations, grant programs, non-profit groups and organizations that offer grants will often ask a grant seeker to submit a grant letter of inquiry. This is also called a grant letter of intent. Address the letter of inquiry to the foundation's contact person or chief executive, and send it by regular mail. Letters of inquiry should not exceed three pages.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the letter by introducing yourself. Tell them why you're writing the letter and provide information regarding your organization's mission.

    • 2

Define your project and detail the similarities between the funder's priorities and the goals of your project. Use economic and demographic statistics to show the need for your project.

    • 3

Show how your project will address the need in question. Cite literature and resources that support your project's idea.

    • 4

State the qualifications and capabilities of key personnel involved with the project. Indicate how much grant funding your organization will need to complete the project, and tell the reader exactly how the grant money will help you reach your goals.

    • 5

Conclude by thanking them for taking the time to read the letter. Reiterate the fact that their grant money is essential to your project and provide your contact information in case they have questions and comments. Sign and date the letter.
