How to Build More Effective Police Report Writing Skills
Police report writing is a lot like writing a school report. An officer must remember that there always fundamentals to follow when writing a report, and the more practice you have doing it, the better you will be. All departments have different procedures and fundamentals when writing a report, so make sure you speak to your supervisor about what is necessary in your department to complete a police report.

Attend a grammar or writing class at your local community college or other educational facility. Sometimes these classes are paid for my your department if you are wishing to better your skills as a police officer. In some cases they are free.

Hire a writing tutor to assist you with your writing skills. If you feel uncomfortable about attending a class at a school, then having a tutor teach you in the comfort of you home is a sure way to improve your writing skills. Tutors can work around your schedule instead of you having to work around a classroom schedule.

Start a writing group for you and other police officers that wish to practice your skills together. Sometimes having a group of friends or other work companions will help you identify those areas you need improvement. You can bounce ideas off of one another.

Take an online writing course. A lot of educational websites give classes online and have no time restraints. Most of these classes require a fee to be paid, but check with your department and see if they are willing to reimburse you for this expense.

Purchase a self-help book to practice and improve your writing skills for police reporting. Most of these books can be found at any major book retailer and offer at least three to four practice report writing forms. These can be rather expensive, but well worth it to gain that extra knowledge you need to write a report.
