Purchase a price guide. Price guides used to be purchased as magazines at grocery stores and card shops. Today, the easiest way to find one is to subscribe to an online price guide like Beckett.

Flip the card over to the backside where the information is stored. Most cards have a lot of information about the player here, but it also has the specific information you need.

Locate the year the card was made. Most years are labeled at the very bottom of the card. The font is usually very small so it might take you a few seconds to find it.

Open your price guide to the year your card was made. These pages will have cards made from different companies.

Locate the company that made your card. This should be easier than finding the year because the company logo will be bigger and probably labeled more than once on the card.

Turn your price guide to the page that has both the proper year and company. From here you will see a list of certain cards with a number besides each.

Locate the card number. This number is usually at the top of the card in one of the corners. Each card in a particular set has a specific number. This number is what makes each card unique.

Locate the card number on the price guide. This line shows the name of the player and how much the card is worth. If you don't see your card number in the list, the card is considered a "common" card. The common card value is usually at the top of the list.
