How to Connect to LimeWire Behind a Firewall
LimeWire is a software program that allows the user to share files with other users on the Internet, but firewall protection might block its use on your computer. The software connects to the Gnutella network, an open network with many people sharing a wide variety of files. LimeWire allows users to search for a file type or file name from other users. The Limewire application operates on Microsoft Windows, Linux and Apple computers. The LimeWire application has additional features to allow the user to customize the appearance and search functions.
Instructions

-
1
Open the LimeWire application and wait until it provides the error message "LimeWire tried to connect to hosts on the Gnutella network but it cannot achieve a connection." That means a firewall is blocking the site.
-
2
Select from the application menu bar "Tools," then "Options," then "Advanced," then "Firewall Config." On Apple computers, select "LimeWire," then "Preferences," then "Advanced," then "Firewall Config."
-
-
3
Change the "listening port" to 6346 and click "Save."
-
4
Open the administration interface for your firewall. For most firewalls this is performed using your Internet browser. Consult your firewall instructions for specific details on how to access the administrative functions.
-
5
Navigate to the firewall administrative function to open a network port. Many firewalls will label this as port forwarding or advanced configuration.
-
6
Add 6346 as the port to forward in the port number. Select TCP as the protocol for this port. If the option exists to allow which direction to open the port, select both "inbound" and "outbound." Save the entry in your firewall.
-
7
Restart the LimeWire application and it will connect to the Gnutella network.
