Instructions

    • 1

Buy enough shingles to do the repair work plus a few extra shingles for any mistakes you might make. Shingles are sold with 29 shingles in a bundle and three or more bundles in a square. For small repairs you may not need an entire square, but you should save the left over shingles for any future repair work.

    • 2

Check for damage to the wooden structure of the roof. If you find any damage you will need to make structural repairs before you start working on the asphalt shingles.

    • 3

Check for any loose nails. Some shingles may have missing or loose nails. If the shingle is not damaged, just hammer in new nails. If the shingle is damaged, use your pry bar to pull up the nails and dispose of them.

    • 4

Staple roofing felt to the roof if you are laying shingles directly onto the roof's wooden structure. If there is already a layer or two of shingles on the roof and you are laying replacement shingles over them, you won't need felt.

    • 5

Apply roofing cement to the edges of the new shingle. Nail the shingle to the roof with four nails, spacing them evenly across the center of the shingle. Use this same technique to replace other missing shingles.

    • 6

For shingles missing around roof pipes, you will need to cut out a square of flashing that is 6 inches wider than the pipe on all sides and has a hole in the center to fit over the pipe. Use cement and nails to secure the flashing to the roof. Put cement on the edges of shingles and lay them over the flashing. Nail the shingles into the roof.

Tips & Warnings
