How to Sew a French Beret
The beret is a quintessential French wardrobe item. Recently, berets have been rather popular with women in many different countries. Usually, to get that chic French look, you have to pay a lot of money for a store-bought beret. However, with some basic sewing skills, it's incredibly easy to sew an inexpensive French beret of your own. When sewing your own beret, you can personalize it as much as you want. Things You'll Need
- Fleece or wool
- Fabric scissors
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Elastic
- Hand sewing needle
- Large fabric-covered button

Cut out a circle of fabric that is 20 inches in diameter. Hem all around the outside of the circle, leaving a 1 inch opening.

Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to wrap around your head. Thread the elastic through the hem using the 1-inch opening, gathering the fabric as you go.

Hand sew the two ends of the elastic together. Hand sew the 1-inch opening in the hem closed.

Lay the hat flat, with the gathered band underneath the top of the hat and iron it so that it retains a crisp beret shape.

Hand sew a matching button onto the middle of the top of the beret. To wear the beret, stretch the elastic end around your head and tilt the top of the beret to one side.
