How to Calculate Feet Into Square Yards
The art of landscaping at times requires the use of conversion calculators to properly measure an area for square footage or square yardage. Planning a landscape project requires detailed precision for tasks such as laying sod, planting crops or simply finding the measurements of a homeowner's property. This process is accomplished by using basic mathematical skills, and sometimes with the aid of a calculator for larger land areas. Calculating feet into square yards can be accomplished following a few guidelines. Does this Spark an idea?

1
For small land areas or rooms, measure the area you wish to calculate into square yards with a tape measure. Use a spool of landscaping tape for larger land areas.
-
2
Measure the width and length of the area in feet. Multiply the two figures together. For example: 27 feet x 36 feet = 972. This is the square footage of the area.

3
Divide by nine the square footage you just calculated. There are nine square feet in every square yard. For example: 972 divided by 9 is 108. This is the square yardage for the area you measured.

Tips & Warnings
If purchasing materials for landscaping projects or home design, round up the square yardage to the nearest whole number (i.e., round up 108 to 110). This will help compensate for any possible miscalculations.
For large land areas, measure at the longest point of width and length. Land perimeters don't always run in straight lines, so this will help to compensate for error.
