How to Dispose of Printer Ink
Once your old printer ink cartridges have stopped working, you have no choice but to dispose of them. An ink cartridge can be refilled, but it will only work so many times before it gets too old to function anymore. Instead of throwing your ink cartridges out with the trash where the ink could harm the environment, dispose of your ink cartridges properly so they can be taken care of. This helps protect the environment and in turn protects you.

1
Remove the used ink cartridge from the printer and place it in a sturdy plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly or secure the top with a rubber band. Alternatively, you can ask the staff at your local office supply store if they provide bags for storing used ink cartridges that need to be recycled. Certain printers come with a bag for storing your old ink cartridge.

Call or visit an office supply store or a store that sells printers or printer ink in your area and ask the staff if they take used printer ink. Many will recycle it for you at the store for no cost. If so, take the bag and give it to one of the sales associates.

Contact the manufacturer of your printer if the office supply store will not take the printer ink and ask if it provides free shipping for used ink cartridges. The manufacturer may send you an envelope or package for returning the ink cartridge. Try visiting the manufacturer's website if you cannot find its phone number to see if recycling services are provided. If not, scroll to the bottom of the page or click "Contact Us" to find the manufacturer's contact information.

Contact your local recycling center if neither of these options works for you. Ask if it takes used ink cartridges and, if not, where you can take your ink to be recycled.
