Once your old printer ink cartridges have stopped working, you have no choice but to dispose of them. An ink cartridge can be refilled, but it will only work so many times before it gets too old to function anymore. Remove the used ink cartridge from the printer and place it in a sturdy plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly or secure the top with a rubber band. Alternatively, you can ask the staff at your local office supply store if they provide bags for storing used ink cartridges that need to be recycled. Certain printers come with a bag for storing your old ink cartridge.

Call or visit an office supply store or a store that sells printers or printer ink in your area and ask the staff if they take used printer ink. Many will recycle it for you at the store for no cost. If so, take the bag and give it to one of the sales associates.
