How to Fix the 3 Rings of Death on an Xbox 360

Since the Xbox 360 was introduced, users have been plagued with the infamous "Red Ring of Death," denoted by three flashing red lights on the system's Ring of Light. More often than not, this indicates a hardware failure. The cause of this problem is probably is the system has overheated. It can be remedied by reapplying thermal compound to the CPU and GPU.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Disassemble the Xbox 360

    • 1

Unplug all power cables, video cables, controllers, hard drive and anything else that is plugged into the Xbox 360.

    • 2

Remove the faceplate by inserting your fingers into the USB port and pulling off the faceplate.

    • 3

Remove the gray side plates on each side. Insert the case opening tool into the holes on the top and bottom of the console to unhinge the gray plate connectors. There are eight connectors in all.

    • 4

Flip the Xbox upside-down and lift open the lid just a little using the case opening tool.

    • 5

Locate the seven rectangular holes between the top shell and the bottom shell. Insert the case opening tool into the holes. You will hear a crisp click as the latches are unlocked.

    • 6

Undo the four latches on the front of the console. The two halves should separate, revealing the inside of the console.

    Remove the Motherboard

    • 7

Unscrew the 14 silver screws with the T12 Torx screwdriver and the eight black screws with the T7 Torx screwdriver. Flip the Xbox right-side up, and the top shell will slide off.

    • 8

Remove the DVD drive. Unplug the DVD power supply and Serial ATA interface and lift it out of the Xbox.

    • 9

Remove the fan. Lift of the white air guide, unplug the fan and gently pry the fan from its fastening clips.

    • 10

Unscrew the RF unit using a T6 Torx screwdriver. Remove the cover and unscrew one last screw. Pull the RF unit out of the console.

    • 11

Life the motherboard out of the console, unplugging anything that might still be connected.

    Apply Thermal Compound

    • 12

Remove the X-clamp on the bottom of the motherboard by gently prying it off.

    • 13

Unscrew the heatsink on the top of the motherboard to reveal the CPU and GPU.

    • 14

Clean the CPU and GPU using ArctiClean 1 and 2.

    • 15

Apply Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound to the CPU and GPU and let it set for 15 minutes.

    • 16

Follow the steps in reverse order to reassemble the Xbox, and it should be cleared of the Red Ring of Death.
