An armoire can be a fabulous addition to your home furniture collection, livening up a room while providing additional shelf space for your belongings. 1
Call up your furniture dealer if you purchased the unit at a retail location and inquire about the maximum load weight for your particular model. Obtaining information directly from the seller accomplishes two things-it provides you with the most up to date and accurate information and it shifts liability from you to the seller in case the unit breaks and there is a dispute about the warranty.

Consult the manual or look on the armoire itself for a weight limit sticker. Many pieces of furniture come with warnings and weight limits listed directly on them, saving you the time and hassle of having to perform self-testing.

Conduct self-testing using weights of various sizes on the shelves of the armoire to ascertain a conservative weight limit for the unit. Increase the overall amount of weight on a shelf slowly, using the lowest possible increment depending on your available system of weights. Look closely at the unit for any signs of bending or impending structural damage, backing off once you start to see (or hear) signs that you are nearing the unit's maximum weight capacity.
