How to Select a Metal Roof

Your roof protects your house from the heat of the sun, the pounding of the rain and the cold, wet snow. A metal roof provides homeowners with high quality and durability not readily available from typical roofs. Because so many metal roofing options exist, deciding on a metal roof can be difficult. However, if you follow a few guidelines, you can select a metal roof that fits your needs Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the color of your metal roof and its aging color. For instance, all metal roofs, such as shingles or other materials, age over time and change color. Copper metal roofs change slowly to a rust color, usually called patina. Black metal can fade and turn dark gray. Green metal can also lighten over time. Pick a color that ages well and looks good over time.

    • 2

Consider how the color complements or coordinates with the color of your house. For instance, a copper or brown roof will go with many different shades of paint. A blue metal roof might only go with darker gray homes. Pick a color that goes with the color of your paint.

    • 3

Consider the quality of the metal roof's flashing. For instance, the edges where metal roof panels meet are protected by what's called "flashing." Flashing comes in different shapes to protect the seam and prevent water from seeping into the sub-roof. L-shaped clasps, or Lap joints, are very good flashings because they have an undulating lip that protects the seam. Fold-over flashing looks good and protects the seams very well.

    • 4

Decide what type of alloy you prefer. Metal roofs come in aluminum, steel and copper alloys. Aluminum is preferable to steel because it can be used on the Eastern and Western coasts where salt water can erode steel and copper alloys.

    • 5

Determine which contractor you want to install your metal roof. Metal roofs require professional contractors. Look for someone who specializes in metal roofs as opposed to "jobbers" who also do other types of roofs. Require references, and obtain a warranty that covers any damages or mishaps to the home during installation. Finally look for an established contractor. For instance, some contractors have been around for decades while others have been around for only a couple of years. Established contractors ensure you have someone to call in 15 years if you have problems with your roof.

    • 6

Decide if you want metal panels or metal shingles. Although there is no real difference between the performance of panels or shingles, metal shingles mimic the traditional shingle appearance with which most people are familiar.

    • 7

Make sure the metal roof is in your budget. Metal roofs cost from $150 to $600 per sheet. Depending on the size of your roof, you could require 10 to 30 sheets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some metal roofs qualify you for a tax credit. Consult your accountant.
