How to Convert Mac Quark Files to InDesign on a PC

Software from desktop-publishing giants Quark and Adobe will let you design and lay out documents like invitations, publications and even books. But once-dominant QuarkXPress has lost some ground recently to Adobe's InDesign, which not only performs most XPress functions but also easily interfaces with other popular Adobe applications like Photoshop and Illustrator. If a Quark loyalist jumps to Adobe, some XPress files may have to move from a Mac into InDesign on a PC. Fortunately, the conversion is easier than you might have imagined.

Things You'll Need

• USB flash drive
• Quark files
• MacIntosh computer
• Adobe InDesign
• PC

Instructions

1. Insert a USB flash drive into the Mac port and wait for the device icon to appear on the desktop. Open the icon and click-and-drag all of the Quark files you want to convert to InDesign.

2. Close out the flash drive window and right-click the icon. Select "Eject" to safely remove the device from the Mac (you can also drag the icon down to the trash in the lower right corner of the dock).

3. Connect the flash drive to the PC that has Adobe InDesign.

4. Launch Adobe InDesign and wait for the software to completely load. Once complete click "File," followed by "Open." This is going to launch a small search window.

5. Select the flash drive to open it in the search window. This displays all of the files currently saved on it. Select the Quark file you want to convert and select "Open." The file is now going to be opened into Quark. Adobe InDesign has the ability to process and open Quark files. Click the "File" button followed by "Save." Type in the name of the file and click "Save." The file is now converted over to InDesign.
