How to Refinish Old Hardwood Pine Floors
Hardwood pine floors create an elegant, polished look to your home. However, after many years, your pine floors will start to exhibit signs of wear and tear from furniture and constant walking on them. Things You'll Need
- Drum sander
- 60 grit sandpaper
- 120 grit sandpaper
- Stain
- Polyurethane
- Brush
- Vacuum

Remove any furniture, rugs and wall hangings from the rooms to be refinished. Cover the light fixtures and tape over the electrical outlets.

Clean the pine floors. Sweep and vacuum the pine floors clean of dust and dirt.

Sand the pine floors with the belt sander and 60 grit sandpaper. Start in the center of the room and pass the belt sander back and forth across the pine floors, overlapping your previous pass by about an inch. Work slowly to ensure you don't gouge the wood.

Vacuum the pine floors clean of dust.

Sand the pine floors again with the belt sander and the 120 grit sandpaper. This will remove the last bits of the old finish and create a smooth surface for applying the new finish. Vacuum the floors clean.

Apply a coat of the new stain to the pine floors with a brush. Brush with long, even strokes to prevent bubbles from forming in the finish. Apply further coats to the pine floors to create a darker finish.

Brush on a thin coat of polyurethane to the pine floors after the new finish has dried. The polyurethane will seal the pine floors and protect them from moisture.

Gel stains work best with softer woods like pine.
Wear eye, ear, mouth and nose protection when operating the drum sander.
Wear hand protection when using chemicals.
Work in an open, ventilated space.
