How to Add Notes to an Adobe PDF

Adobe Acrobat allows users to make notes on PDF documents. This is very useful for editing electronic documents and Acrobat has a variety of tools that can be used to make notes: "Sticky Notes" allow users to add comments in pop-up boxes. The "Text Edit" tool indicates where to add, edit or delete text. The "Call Out" tool points to a specific place in the document to where comments are referred.

1. Open the PDF document using Adobe Acrobat.

2. Click on "Comment" then "Show Comment & Markup Toolbar." The toolbar will appear with a variety of commenting options from which to choose.

3. Select the option you wish to use. For example:

   • To use a Sticky Note, click on "Sticky Note" and place your cursor in the location of the document where you would like to add the note and click. A pop-up box will appear for you to type in your note. When finished, click the minimize button in the upper right hand corner. To view your note, scroll your cursor over the "Sticky Note" icon and your note will appear. To edit the note, click on the icon and the pop-up box will reappear. To delete, click on the icon then "delete."

   • To add notes on editing text, click on "Text Edit" and place your cursor in the text you want to edit. Text edits do not change the text, but indicate where text should be inserted, edited or deleted. To indicate new text, simply click and a pop-up box will appear where you can type in your suggested new text. To delete text, simply highlight the text you want to erase and click "delete." A red line will appear through the text to indicate your edits.

   • To use the "Call Out" tool, click on the small red box with black lines and red arrow. Place your cursor over the location in the document you wish to reference and click and drag your mouse. The red arrow indicates the place in the document you are referencing and the red text box allows you to type in your comment.

4. Save the PDF document with the added notes.
