How to Sew With Serger Cone Thread on a Sewing Machine

Most normal spools of thread have about 25 yards of thread on them. The large, cone-shaped spools that are used with sergers usually have 3,000 yards of thread. If you have a common color that you're working with, being able to use a cone spool instead of a normal spool can be quite advantageous. All you'll need to be able to use the larger spools on your sewing machine is a thread stand.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a thread stand at your local fabric or craft store, or you can make one yourself. A thread stand consists of a small platform with a spoke that holds the spool and a tall, metal rod with a hook at the top through which the thread will be fed.

    • 2

Set up your thread stand behind your sewing machine in about the same area that a normal spool of thread would sit on the machine. If you need to make a matching bobbin, you should be able to do so from this same location, just pull the thread from the cone up through the hook on the stand and then follow the threading procedures for making a bobbin on your machine.

Insert your bobbin into the machine, and thread the machine from the cone, up through the hook on the stand and through the rest of the machine. Try a few test stitches to make sure the thread tension is set correctly. Because the thread is in a different position, you may need to tighten or loosen the tension setting.
