How to Restore Files From the XP Backup Folder

Microsoft Windows XP Professional includes a backup utility that gives you the ability to quickly create a backup of important files and folders that you cannot easily replace in the event of data loss. You can install the backup utility for XP Home edition from the original installation disk. As Microsoft.com points out, there are many ways to lose data including power surges, accidental deletion or simple hardware failure. However, by using the Windows XP backup utility you can restore files from previously made backups to retrieve lost data.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button and click "All Programs." Select "Accessories" and then choose "System Tools." From the System Tools menu, click "Backup" to open the Windows XP backup utility.

    • 2

Select "Advanced mode" from the Backup or Restore Wizard to enter the advanced mode. Click "Restore Wizard [Advanced]."

    • 3

Choose the backup you would like to restore from. Click "Browse" to search another location on your computer if your backup does not appear in the file tree.

    • 4

Click next to the items you would like to restore to place a check mark next to each folder or file. Click "Next."

    • 5

Click "Finish" if you would like to restore the files to their original location. If you would like to specify a different location, choose "Advanced."

    • 6

Select where you would like to restore your backup files to from the drop-down menu. Click "Next" and choose to leave existing files when the backup is restored. Click "Next."

    • 7

Choose your advanced restore options such as restoring security settings along with your files. Click "Next," and select "Finish" to start the backup. Click "Close" once the backup utility is finished restoring your backup.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always keep your backup files on a separate hard drive, in case your primary hard drive fails. When you replace the failed hard drive, you can easily select any connected internal or external hard drive containing your backup information and restore your files to the new hard drive.

  • Do not attempt to restore backup files to a hard drive that failed. This could cause you to lose your data again.
