In turn, they use these lists when mailing out catalogs and direct mail pieces to people like you. Once they accumulate their own customer lists, they sell those names to mailing list vendors as an extra source of income. Locate catalogs of companies that sell products or services in which you are interested. Check the Sunday paper or save direct mailings that arrive in your mailbox. Look inside the catalog or direct mail and locate the name and address of the distributing company. If a phone number is listed, call and tell them you want to be added to their list. If only an address is listed, write a short letter that contains the key sentence: "Add me to your mailing list."

A neatly typed letter is more likely to be placed in their system more accurately. Also, purchase items from your favorite distributors periodically so that you will remain an active member of their distribution list.
