How to Recycle Cat Food & Dog Food Cans

After months of feeding hungry dogs and cats, you may have a pile of used food cans in your garage. Before you put them out with the rest of your garbage, consider recycling them. Cat and dog food cans are usually made of aluminum and can be recycled along with your soda and soup cans. Recycling cans helps reduce household waste and keeps the landfills clear of reusable material. Some recycling centers even offer money for each can you turn in.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the label from the outside of the can.

    • 2

Thoroughly wash the inside and outside of the can. Cans with food bits can attract insects while waiting to be disposed of, and most processing centers will not accept dirty cans.

    • 3

Gather all your cans together in one bag. This includes soda cans, soup cans, cat and dog food cans and any other aluminum.

    • 4

Drop off at a local recycling center. These can be found online or in the phone book; often, they are located in the parking lots of large grocery stores. Some neighborhoods have curbside recycling pickup and will save you a trip. Contact your city or waste removal company to see if this is available.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful of edges when handling cans. They can be sharp and cut your skin.
