How to Buy Bed Sets

Most of us spend between six and eight hours asleep each day. That's between 2,000 and 3,000 hours we spend in a bed each year, and that doesn't even include the few hours each weekend we allow ourselves to sleep in. It's because of this that most folks want to find the perfect bed set for all of those hours of sleep. Simply by determining your home's style, year-round climate considerations and your budget, you'll be sleeping in your new bed set sooner than you know it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what type of bed set you'd like to purchase. Bed sets can include a fitted sheet, flat sheet, comforter and pillow cases or a bed set can simply be a fitted sheet and a duvet set (duvet and cover). A bed set could also be a fitted or flat sheet with a bed quilt, which is thick blanket similar to what you'd find in many hotel rooms. Choosing which type of bed set you'd like may be determined by the weather in your area or simply the look you want for the bedroom.

Choose main colors and patterns you'd like to have for your bed set. Think about the overall theme and style of the bedroom when deciding this. For example, if you have a "shabby chic" bedroom, a vintage-looking floral pattern might be something to look into. Also consider the color of the sheets compared with the color or pattern of your comforter, duvet or quilt. If your comforter has a strong pattern with multiple colors, for example, choose a sheet that is one solid color taken from one of the colors on the comforter.

Choose the fabric you'd like for your bed set. If you're choosing a bed set solely for winter, you may consider looking into a flannel bed set, which is much warmer than traditional fabric bed sets. Many department or furniture stores sell different bed sets for different seasons. Ikea, for example, has different "weights" of duvets. The lighter weights are better for the summer months because they are lighter. If you want one duvet year-round, choose one of the medium weight duvets for optimum comfort in hot or cold climates. Other fabrics, such as silk sheets or comforters with lace, may be another option for you. Think of the care needed for unique fabrics, as some of these will require hand washing or dry-cleaning.

Research online at various Internet stores, such as Overstock.com and Amazon.com for bed sets that fit your needs based on the decisions you've made in Step 1 through Step 3. Write down price options and keep your favorite bed sets in your favorites so that you can keep researching before making any final decisions.

Research your local department stores and furniture stores through websites and in person. After finding the perfect bed set that will fit all of your needs and that is within the budget you've set for yourself, buy it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check bed sets in person whenever possible to ensure the quality and fabric is up to your standards. If you do purchase online, be sure of the online store's return policy just in case the bed set is not what you thought it would be.
