How to Clean Carpets With Rug Doctor

The Rug Doctor is a commercial carpet-cleaning machine that can be rented. Commercial carpet cleaners are more heavy-duty versions of home steam-clean machines. They spray a cleaner onto the carpeting, use a brush to work the cleaning solution into the surface, and use a strong vacuum to suck out the water and dirt. While being somewhat heavy and bulky, these machines do a good job for a yearly spring cleaning or before a special occasion when you want your home to look its best. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Move all the furniture out of the room, or pile it into the corners if removal is impossible. The carpeting will be damp for a few hours after cleaning, so the furniture must stay off to allow the air to circulate and the surface to dry.

    • 2

Vacuum the entire carpet going vertically and then horizontally in order to remove all loose dirt and objects before shampooing.

    • 3

Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Rug Doctor cleaning solution with one gallon of hot water in a clean bucket. Pour the water and cleaner into the bottom tank of the machine and connect all of the hoses.

    • 4

Move the carpet cleaner to the area you are going to clean. Plug the machine into the wall. Begin in one corner of the room and work down in rows in order to cover the entire floor evenly.

    • 5

Turn the machine on using the toggle switch. Hold the red button down to cause the solution to begin spraying out onto the carpet. Pull the cleaner backward while holding the red button down. When the cleaner is about a foot from the end of the row, let go of the red button so that the cleaner can remove all of the moisture left in the carpet.

    • 6

Tip up the front of the machine slightly to move in place to do another row. Overlap rows by a couple of inches to make sure that the entire carpet surface has been covered.

    • 7

Watch for when the water stops spraying into the top tank. This will indicate that you are out of cleaning solution. Move the cleaner near the sink, remove and drain the top tank and refill the bottom tank with more cleaner and water solution. Replace all pieces and hoses and return to cleaning.

Tips & Warnings

  • For extremely dirty carpets, clean them completely in horizontal rows and then repeat the process in vertical rows.

  • Do not use this system on sisal, silk or antique wool rugs, or on hardwood floors.
