How to Make Pool Cue Chalk

Making your own pool cue chalk is extremely simple. Besides having a very low cost, many people find that the chalk they make themselves works even better than store-bought chalk. The process takes a few days, so patience is a necessity.

Things You'll Need

  • 7-day medication container
  • Plaster of Paris (purchased at a craft store)
  • Blue food coloring (or color of choice)
  • Water
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Knife
  • Wax paper (if desired)

Instructions

    • 1

Mix equal parts of water and the plaster of Paris in a mixing bowl. Depending on the size of the compartments for the medication container, 4 to 5 tbsp. of each should be plenty. Mix in the dye to achieve the desired color.

    • 2

Pour or spoon the mixture into the compartments of the medication container, trying to keep the volume at a level that will form cubes.

    • 3

Leave the container outside or in a dry area for a day or two, allowing the mixture to begin to solidify, but not harden completely.

    • 4

Use a knife or flat object to carefully remove the chalk from the compartments. If the shape is compromised, gently use your hands and a flat surface to slightly remold it.

    • 5

Allow the chalk to dry for two or three additional days, or until completely solidified. The chalk is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although it is not necessary, you may choose to line the inside edges of the medication chambers with small squares of wax paper. Not only does this help ensure a simple removal from the container, but it also provides a paper wrapping for clean handling.
