How to Install Flexible Aluminum Dryer Vent Pipe

The dryer exhausts the moisture from your clothes through the exhaust hose and to the outside dryer vent. When the dryer hose becomes clogged with lint, the dryer takes longer to dry your clothes. This is because the moist air is recirculated back into the dryer drum. Remove your old dryer hose and install a flexible aluminum dryer hose to your dryer and vent pipe. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet and move the dryer away from the wall so you can work behind the dryer. Remove the clamp that secures the old dryer hose to the exhaust port on the back of the dryer with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the hose off the dryer exhaust port.

    • 2

Loosen the clamp on the other end of the dryer hose that secures the hose to the outside dryer vent pipe. Pull the hose off the vent pipe and discard the hose.

    • 3

Clean the inside of the dryer exhaust port and the outside vent pipe with a lint brush. Remove all of the lint and any debris inside the exhaust port and pipe.

    • 4

Inspect the outside vent pipe from the inside. Look for signs of moisture that can cause lint buildup. Try pushing the pipe out to see if the outside vent is loose or if the pipe has damage or corrosion. Replace the outside vent if the pipe is faulty.

    • 5

Go outside and inspect the seal around the vent and the outside wall. Reapply a bead of silicone caulk with a caulking gun to prevent rainwater from seeping between the vent and the wall. Check the securing screws for missing or loose connections. Replace or repair any missing or loose screws.

    • 6

Go back inside the laundry room and place a new clamp over one end of the flexible aluminum dryer hose. Carefully pull the end of the hose over the outside vent pipe. The hose has a metal rib which will have to be slowly moved over the pipe. Continue pulling the hose until 3 inches of hose is over the pipe. Tighten the clamp around the hose and pipe with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 7

Place the second clamp on the other end of the dryer hose. Thread the open end of hose over the dryer exhaust port until you have 3 inches of hose over the port. Secure the hose to the exhaust port by tightening the hose clamp.

    • 8

Plug the dryer cord back into the electrical outlet and push the dryer back into its working position.
